Gateshead Quays lies at the heart of Tyneside next to the
world famous Tyne Bridge. More than £250 million is being invested in
major new visitor attractions which will open from summer 2001. Gateshead
Council and its partners are overseeing five major regeneration projects -
three funded by the National Lottery. They are transforming the south bank
of the River Tyne in the heart of the North East's regional capital, directly
opposite the recently refurbished Newcastle Quayside.A new contemporary art
gallery, concert hall and a stunning bridge are at the heart of the new cultural
quarter, which also includes luxury hotels, bars, restaurants and clubs.The
area is a major part of a joint bid by Newcastle and Gateshead to be the European
Capital of Culture in 2008.
Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art.
A disused grain warehouse is being transformed into
the largest centre for the contemporary visual arts outside London. Britain's
newest national gallery will be at the cutting edge of new art, and includes
artists' studios so new work by famous artists can be created in the building.This
international gallery also boasts a rooftop restaurant with views of the
cityscape and a riverside cafe-bar. It opens in September 2001.
